There were three things I hated most. Betrayal, stupidity, and greed.

And the stupid, greedy old man had betrayed me. And for what? That was what I didn’t understand.

He’d had it easy. Maybe too easy. He’d amassed a great deal of money under my protection for doing so little. For pointing out the old, the lonely, and the destitute—in a fucking cemetery—to add to my team.

It was like shooting fish in a barrel. And I gave them purpose. I gave them a future. Him a future. But he’d grown foolish and insatiable. And blamed it on a woman. I’d sent some guys to her house, but they’d found nothing. In fact, it had already been searched.

Tonight, he paid the price for his arrogance.

I threw back my head and laughed, the sound echoing throughout the old warehouse I’d inherited from my grandmother. Since I was alone, it didn’t matter. There was no one else nearby to hear me. Not even the rent-a-cops came around. The building was isolated, quiet, secure, making it the perfect hideout. My home away from home. I’d even rigged up a nice cot in what was once a manager’s office so I could sleep there when I wanted.

Over the last few years, I’d spent much of my time here. Having meetings, strategizing, storing drugs, the list went on. Hell, I’d even offed a couple of employees who’d struggled to follow directions here.

I found two offenses inexcusable. Being double-crossed and having someone half-ass their job. In this line of work, I couldn’t afford to get sloppy. Sloppiness led to mistakes, and mistakes led to getting caught. I’d worked too damn hard building my empire to spend the rest of my life in prison.

As a safety net, I’d installed a state-of-the-art security system. Not that anyone had ever come snooping around the place, but if they did, I’d be the first to know.

And sometimes, I came here when I just needed to think.

Of course, tonight all I could think of was the stupid, old bastard. Had he lost his mind? Maybe he was suffering from dementia? It amazed me when people thought they could blackmail their superiors without it coming back to bite them in the ass. Well, the old gravedigger found out the hard way when my knife went into him, smooth like butter. He’d gotten what he deserved.

I should’ve made him dig his own grave first, but I didn’t want to risk him getting away or someone coming by and interrupting us. It would’ve served him right. That was what traitors and cowards and blackmailers deserved.

He might’ve learned his lesson too late, but it would serve as a warning to everyone else.

Don’t fuck with me.

The old man was gone, but I still had a problem. I didn’t know if he’d been holding out on me about the drugs. He swore he didn’t have my latest shipment, hadn’t seen it. Maybe he didn’t, but what if he was trying to go into business for himself?

The two old geezers wouldn’t be able to set up shop on their own.
